: : I am interested in other peoples thoughts about this poem
: At what level and how comprehensively do you want
: it approached?
: The poem is one of Jeffers's starkest and posits
: once again his metaphysics (found in "Apology")
: that all being is both violent and beautiful and
: the more intense the being, the more violent and
: more beautiful. Mercy is blasphemous.

The lines that I find most difficult to deal with are
"The destruction that brings an eagle from heaven
is better than mercy" I think he is saying how
difficult it is to have compassion for certain events
that take place in the natural world. We must be careful
as to how we judge the eagle. We must judge it on its terms.
