I neglected to mention that Brophy has some very interesting thumbnail Freudian approaches to many of the narratives in Zaller's _Centennial Essays for RJ_ (U Delaware P, 1971) -- which he finds less useful and meaningful than myth/ritual approaches. Zaller also includes all of Everson's essays that I mentioned earlier.
