Tamar's mother

    Hello all.

I'm also working on a paper for Alan Williamson, on Bakhtine's concept of chronotope as related to ritual in "Tamar." In the course of my readings, I've come across several places where writers seem to take for granted that Tamar is the daughter of David and Helen, rather than Lily.

I'm curious, is this a general assumption? If so, how are the following lines interpreted?

Helen says to Tamar, "you are that woman's daughter," and mentions that she and "your mother" were on the cliff watching the orgiastic dance; also Stella claims that Helen "has been dead for forty years."

Thanks for any thoughts in response.
